Spring Getaways
Our final Getaway of 2023 was recently held at Brownhill Creek over two separate weekends.
Campers set up at Brownhill Creek Caravan Park for the start of a fun and busy weekend, full of social and outdoor activities.
“I loved the animals and enjoyed her time away somewhere different.” Camper, Bronwyn.
Campers are given time to settle in, reconnect with their friends, and prepare for a busy weekend at the start of each getaway.
To kickstart each Getaway, a shared meal is enjoyed then evening activities like soccer, evening walks or a movie.
Participants enjoyed a BBQ dinner outside in the balmy Spring weather, cooked by camper Darren and Client Coach Michael.
Getaway weekends are a fun and adventurous weekend for adults over the age of 18. It’s a wonderful way for people to practise their independence skills away from home, meet new people and explore new places and experiences while receiving support.
Getaways are also an excellent way to improve social skills and make new friends.
Campers had the opportunity to visit Cleland Wildlife park on Saturday, where they could hold a koala and interact with a variety of native Australian animals and wildlife.
When campers returned to the Brownhill Creek Caravan Park, the weather was perfect for an afternoon of cricket in the sun and swimming.
Dinner was homemade pizzas, which everyone enjoyed outside while the weather was perfect.
In the evening, campers could play some outdoor games, go for a walk, or head to Carrick Hill to watch the sun set over Adelaide.
Orana getaways have been running for a few years and will continue to provide campers with a fun experience away from home.
Getaways is also an opportunity for parents and carers to enjoy some time off.
“It’s great that we can support parents and carers to have a break whilst we’re running our Getaways.” Amy Sherpa, Orana Holiday Coordinator.
Many campers have been attending Orana weekend getaways for years, so it’s a great chance to catch up with friends and spend a weekend together.
“Weekend getaways are always fun and have everyone laughing; it allows clients to step outside of their comfort zone to try or learn something new.”
On the final day of our Getaway, campers visited Hahndorf Farm Barn and got a taste of what it’s like to be a farmer! Each camper has the opportunity to milk a cow and ride around the perimeter of the Farm Barn on a tractor-pulled cart.
Campers on the second weekend chose to visit Bounce on their final day. Playing dodgeball, basketball and seeing how high each could jump. Bounce also has a low-ropes course that mimics that of Australian Ninja Warriors, the perfect place for each camper to test their ninja skills!
After one final shared lunch at a local pub, each camper packed their belongings and headed home with their families and carers.
“I loved lunch at the Ed with my friends. It was great and so enjoyable,” camper, Lucia.
Orana Getaways are held four times a year at various locations. Camps for campers under the age of 18 are also available and are held four times a year at various locations.
