How Does the NDIS Work?

May 28, 2025

If you or someone you care for has a disability in Australia, chances are you’ve heard of the NDIS already. But what is NDIS exactly? How does it work, and what kind of support can it offer? Whether you’re just beginning your journey or looking for ways to get more from your existing plan, understanding how the NDIS operates is essential to making informed decisions and accessing the right support.

What is the NDIS?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a government-funded initiative that provides support to Australians with a permanent and significant disability – or more specifically, it provides people with empowerment, choice and inclusion. Designed to put participants in control of the supports and services they need, the NDIS offers funding that’s tailored to each individual’s goals and needs. Whether it’s assistance with daily living, access to therapies, home modifications or employment support, the NDIS ensures participants have the tools to lead more independent and fulfilling lives. So, what does the NDIS really stand for? It stands for opportunity – an opportunity for people living with disability to participate fully in the community, achieve their personal goals and live life on their own terms.

How Does the NDIS Work?

At its core, the NDIS is about personalised support. Once deemed eligible, a participant works with a planner or Local Area Coordinator (LAC) to develop an individualised plan. This plan outlines the participant’s goals and the funded supports needed to achieve them.

NDIS plans generally fall into three categories:

  • Core supports: Assistance with everyday activities such as personal care or community access.
  • Capital supports: Funding for one-off purchases like assistive technologies, home modifications or equipment.
  • Capacity-building supports: Services that help build independence, such as training, therapy or employment programs.

Once a plan is approved, participants can choose who provides their services… that’s where registered NDIS providers like Orana come in.
