What is Supported Employment? A Guide to Meaningful Work for People with Disability

May 28, 2025

At Orana, we believe everyone deserves the opportunity to participate in meaningful work. Supported Employment provides just that – a tailored employment pathway designed to help people with disability build skills, confidence and independence in a supportive environment. But what is Supported Employment, and how does it actually work?

Understanding Supported Employment

Supported Employment is a model of work that empowers people with disability to engage in paid employment with the guidance, training, and assistance they need to thrive. Unlike traditional employment settings, Supported Employment recognises that every person has unique strengths and support needs – we provide customised solutions so people can enjoy the social, financial and emotional benefits of work. Whether it’s working in packaging, assembly, commercial laundry, kitchen operations or administration, Supported Employment opportunities span a wide range of industries. These roles are designed to be flexible and inclusive, focusing on skill-building, team collaboration, and long-term development.

How Supported Employment Works

At its core, Supported Employment combines real-world work experience with tailored support. Here’s how the process typically works:

  • Individual Assessment: Each person is assessed to understand their abilities, interests and goals.
  • Job Matching: Participants are matched with roles that suit their strengths and provide room for growth.
  • On-the-Job Support: A team of job coaches and support staff assist with training, task execution and workplace adjustments.
  • Ongoing Development: Employees are supported in upskilling and progressing towards greater independence or open employment if they choose.

This structure allows people with disability to learn new skills at their own pace, take pride in their contributions, and enjoy the camaraderie of a supportive work environment.

The Benefits of Supported Employment

Supported Employment delivers a whole range of benefits not just for the individuals involved, but for families, employers, and the broader community. These include:

  • Increased independence and self-confidence
  • Social inclusion and teamwork
  • Greater financial autonomy
  • Pathways to open employment or further education

For many, these roles are life-changing – offering more than just a job, but a sense of purpose, belonging and achievement.
