Can I access the NDIS? People who meet the following criteria may be able to access the NDIS:
- Have a permanent and significant disability that affects your ability to take part in everyday activities
- Are under 65 years of age when you first access the scheme
- Are an Australian citizen, a permanent resident or a New Zealand citizen who hold a Protected Special Category Visa

If you are already receiving supports through Orana in most cases you will be made automatically eligible for the NDIS and your details will be passed on to the NDIA via the current state or federal funding bodies. You will be contacted by the NDIA when it is time for your transition.
If you are not currently receiving funded disability supports you will need to register for the NDIS. You can do this by contacting the NDIA on 1800 800 110 and asking for an Access Request Form.
You (or your nominee) would then receive a phone call from the NDIA to confirm details and will be asked questions about the individual to determine eligibility for the NDIS.
If you are made eligible for the NDIS, you will then be contacted to arrange a time for an NDIS Planning Meeting, this will either be with an NDIS planner or a Local Area Coordinator (LAC). You can have this planning meeting over the phone or face to face, however Orana recommends that ask for a face to face planning meeting.
At the NDIS planning meeting, your NDIS planner will talk to you about any supports you currently receive and the supports you need to live your life. You can talk to your planner about any goals you might have and the support to help you achieve them. You can bring someone who knows you well and you trust to support you at your NDIS planning meeting.
Your NDIS planner will then develop your individualised NDIS plan and will let you know once it has been approved.
It is important that people are well prepared for their NDIS planning meeting so that all of your support needs are considered in your NDIS plan. Orana recommends taking time to think about and document your needs before your NDIS planning meeting. Every person is different so everyone’s support needs and goals are different. Some things to think about and document are:
- Any disability supports you currently access and how often you access them
- Any gaps in the supports you currently receive
- Any informal support arrangements you have
- Any aids or equipment you might use and whether they are working well for you
- How you get around – what type transport you use and who helps you
- Any goals you have for the future and what support you might need to achieve them
People supported by Orana will be provided with a copy of the My NDIS Planning Workbook as well as information and support to help people prepare for their NDIS planning meeting.
If you have funded supports in your NDIS plan, you will need to choose how to manage the funding in your plan. There are some different options people can choose to best suit their needs. This will be discussed at your NDIS planning meeting.
- NDIA managed – service providers claim directly from the NDIA when a support has been provided. The NDIA will only engage service providers who are registered with the NDIS.
- Plan Management provider – Funding will be provided on top of your funded supports to pay for a plan management provider who can manage the funds. Participants can receive supports from service providers who are both registered and not registered with the NDIS.
- Self-managed – The NDIS participant or their nominee can manage their plan and pay for the supports directly and claim directly from the NDIS. You can choose to engage with both registered and non-registered providers.
- Combination – You can also choose to have a combination of the above options for different parts of your NDIS plan.
Support coordination can also be included in your NDIS plan. The Support Coordinator will help you put your plan into action. This is called plan implementation and helps you connect with the supports in your NDIS plan, maintain them and help you to achieve your goals.
People’s needs and goals change over time, therefore your NDIS plan will be reviewed every 12 months to see how you are progressing with your goals and make sure you’re getting the support you need. If your personal circumstances change significantly and this affects the supports you need from the NDIS, you can request a change of circumstance plan review at any time by completing the change of circumstances form.
