Cooking with Confidence
Orana has recently launched its new program ‘Cooking with Confidence’ and it has been such a success.
Josh is one of the Orana clients that has been supported by the ‘Cooking with Confidence’ program.
Josh expressed his interest in learning how to cook with his coordinator at Disability SA, who in turn contacted Orana’s Capacity Building Team. Orana met with Josh and his family to discuss the details, design and delivery of the cooking program in Josh’s own home.
Josh decided he wanted to learn how to cook because his goal is to move out of home next year and that meant he needed to be able to cook for himself, by himself.
So far Josh has learnt to cook Curried Sausages, Chicken Curry, Special Fried Rice and Tandoori Sausage Rolls.
Josh is having fun cooking, learning how to read new recipes, choosing what he wants to learn how to cook, taking leftovers to work for lunch and sharing recipes with friends.
‘The cooking program is something I can talk about with my friends’ says Josh.
After a few weeks learning how to cook, Josh feels more confident and is a lot more familiar with a variety of utensils in the kitchen (such as the different knives and their purposes), using the stove top and the different levels of heating. He is also learning about safety and hygiene in the kitchen. Alicia, his Client Development Coordinator has noticed his increased confidence too even though it is only his fourth session!
‘I look forward to cooking each week. I feel happy when I get to eat my left overs. I can’t wait to come home when we have a session on!’ says Josh. Next recipe on Josh’s list is a yummy Spicy Sausage Pizza.
Keep up the good cooking Josh!
